What is Mercury retrograde?

When the planet of communication seems to move backward in the sky.

What it means

It is when the planet Mercury seems to move backward in the sky. In truth, it never really goes backward; it is just an optical illusion from here on Earth, like when you are in a fast car and the car in the next lane seems to roll in reverse.

What it means in astrology

In astrology, Mercury rules conversations, messages, travel and electronic devices. When it is retrograde, this period is linked to small mix-ups, misread messages, delays and the need to calmly review what we have already done.

Example

Imagine Maria agrees to meet a friend at the mall, but they each understand a different time and miss each other. Maria jokes: "Of course, Mercury retrograde messing up my plans again!"

Quick tip

Read your messages twice before sending and confirm times calmly.
